24 Things I Love

Something I haven’t done in a while is reintroduce myself. I love writing posts for my faithful followers and keeping you all updated. Sometimes I forget that new friends have found their way over to the blog.

If you’re old or new around here, welcome, I hope you stick around!

Here’s a little bit about me. My name is Rachel. I am 24 years old and 3 ½ years happily married! Growing up in in Missouri in a large family of 11 was never boring. I was home educated, didn’t go to college, and jumped into a full-time mission internship right out of high school. I’ve have lived in both Haiti and the Philippines for large spans of time.

I’ve been writing updates since 2016 and started my blog in 2018. In 2020 my haitian husband and I started a non-profit called Espwa Demen, in Haiti. Since then I have juggled; a part time job, consistent blogging, running our ministry, and recently starting my own resale side gig.

In addition to loving blogging, I thought it would be fun to share 24 things I love, in honor of this Valentine’s season. Here goes…

1. Walking in the Rain

This became an obsession of mine in Haiti. Warm sun and spontaneous rain showers make the perfect walking atmosphere in my opinion.

2. Exploring

I did a ton of this in Haiti before it got too dangerous for me to go out alone.

3. Thrifting

Ask anyone who knows me, I’ve always been a money cruncher. I get a thrill from finding high quality items at a great price. Thus my side gig in resale!

4. Coffee Dates

Whether with a group of girls, one on one catching up, or with my husband. I’m always up for a slow morning sitting at a local coffee shop.

5. Vintage

New things don’t impress me. I love the warm and cozy vibes of well-loved decor.

6. House Plants

My dream house would consist of plants in every room and on every windowsill. I hate being trapped inside, especially in the winter. Plants add a happy vibe to any room, plus some of them have even been proven to boost your health! Read my last post about the Spider plant here.

7. Star Gazing

One of my most favorite activities and something my husband and I spent a lot of time doing when we were dating. He would always come to see me and sit out in the yard after getting out of school at 7pm.

8. Writing

In addition to posting on my blog twice a month I keep a personal journal, a journal for my baby, write letters to friends, and I am in the middle of writing/illustrating a children’s book I hope to release this year.

9. International Music

Be it French, Haitian Creole, Spanish, or Chinese. I enjoy a variety of music in multiple languages. You won’t often find me listening to an all-English playlist.

10. Birth

I LOVE attending births, assisting births, and talking about birth. There is nothing more beautiful than the moment a new life is brought into the world. (: I’ve assisted 50 births over the past five years!

11. Mountains

Who doesn’t love mountains?!

12. Women Detective Shows

My tv show of choice is often a detective type action show with a woman lead role. Lately I’ve enjoyed PBS Masterpiece’s Scarlet and The Duke.

13. Homemade Pistachio Coffee Syrup

I use this recipe.

14. Old Mirrors

Particularly an amazing gold one I got at an antique store and have hung over my desk.

15. Budgeting

I’ve been loving the YNAB app the past two years, it’s great and keeps me focused on my financial goals.

16. From Scratch Cooking

I’ve never liked baking, but I enjoy whipping up a healthy and hearty meal to share. The Magnolia cookbooks are great.

17. Horses

For as long as I can remember I’ve admired horses (once I even volunteered at a Spanish stable in exchange for riding one of their horses whenever I wanted!). I particularly love the thrill of galloping alone in an open field.

18. Classic Nail Polish Colors

This is my current favorite.

19. Travel

Self-explanatory considering the hundreds of stamps on my passport! A while back I wrote a three-part series of posts on how and why I started into mission work and international travel.

20. Plaid Shackets

Particularly those in fall colors.

21. Language

Learning new languages, hearing other languages spoken, talking about the differences between languages with native speakers.

22. Fridays

Best day of the week.

23. Thai Food

We have this Pad Thai restaurant in our town that has become my favorite. I also enjoy making my own Asian meals. Thai tea anyone??

24. Dried Flowers

Fun fact: I still have the first rose my husband gave me in 2018 for my birthday because I dried it! I also have a small collection of dried flowers from walks with kids I cared for in Haiti, and from a friend’s wedding.

Let’s Talk

What is something that you love?

If you know me, what is one thing you were surprised to see on my list?

Hi! I’m Rachel. Through a series of God orchestrated events I ended up in Haiti, in 2017.  Through years of serving with a ministry there I came to love the country and its people. I met Nelson and we got married in 2020. It was the best decision of my life!
