Espwa Demen

Nelson and Rachel Espazien began working together in Haiti shortly after their marriage in 2020, after years of volunteering with another ministry.

It became clear to them that though Haiti was in a desperate situation, there was still hope. This hope rests in Haiti’s youth, who, as they become the next generation, have an opportunity to change the course of the nation. And more importantly, in Jesus Christ who has a good plan for the island of mountains, even now, and is ever working behind the scenes bringing beauty from ashes. Along their journey they have seen countless glimpses of this.

The Name

Espwa Demen means The Hope Of Tomorrow in the native language of Haiti. In mid 2021, Espwa Demen was formed with Nelson and Rachel as founders. Soon after, several Haitian individuals partnered with them and joined the team. Providing their time and talents freely, out of a desire to produce a lasting impact on their communities.

This group of committed local volunteers continues to grow.

Espwa Demen works throughout Centre Haiti, with main focus on two specific areas (names withheld for security). Functioning 99% through the volunteer time of local Haitians. They desire to be a part of change in their own communities.

We believe this to be the most sustainable way for a ministry to function. Especially considering the risks involved with internationals traveling in Haiti in more recent years. As well as cultural and language barriers that take a significant amount of time to bridge.

Our Goal

The whole focus of Espwa Demen is on empowering families to stay together and to thrive. We do this by sponsoring students through school, nutritional support, medical assistance for special needs children, caring for the elderly, prayer, Bible programs, and meeting various unexpected needs (such as renting a house for a family or aiding in church building projects).

Our hope is to reach 100 sponsored kids and start after school programs with them including; mentoring, teaching hands on trades, and teaching English. As well as reaching the capacity to work with street kids in our local areas.

Espwa Demen is set up to legally accept donations through our online support us page but has not yet been set up as a 501c3 organization with tax exempt status. That is another of our future goals!

Hi! I’m Rachel. Through a series of God orchestrated events I ended up in Haiti, in 2017.  Through years of serving with a ministry there I came to love the country and its people. I met Nelson and we got married in 2020. It was the best decision of my life!
