Jesus, Keep Us in the Moment

You take my eyes off of the future
You lead my heart out of the past
You are the promise right here in the moment
Where I find rest
You are as good as it gets.

Francesca Battistelli

It’s too easy to not feel present. We live in the past– lamenting the good days gone by and how “easy” it was back then. We mourn opportunities that have passed us by. Or we live in the future, always working towards the next goal, reaching for the next thing, discontent, and striving for what we believe will make us happy.

The problem with focusing on the past or longing for the future is this: they are out of our control. The past is in the past and we can’t go back there. The future hasn’t happened yet. We can’t determine the future.
When we’re fixated with either past or future we perpetually chase shadows and miss the blessings of here and now.

We get caught up in the “what if’s.” We spend our nights staring up at the ceiling and our days distracted with worry. It is an exhausting existence!

There is so much in store for each of our lives in Christ. If we do not stay focused we will surely miss the blessings of the tasks right here.

The Lord knew this would be a struggle many of us would face. He gives wisdom, warning, and comfort in his Word for those, like myself, who often struggle to live in the present.

Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Matthew 6:31-34 ESV

Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

Isaiah 43:18-19 ESV

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

Ephesians 5:15-16 ESV

Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.

James 4:14 ESV

Lord, take our eyes off of the future. Lord, lead our hearts out of the past.
We know you are the promise, right here in the moment. You give us rest
Jesus, you are as good as it get.

Hi! I’m Rachel. Through a series of God orchestrated events I ended up in Haiti, in 2017.  Through years of serving with a ministry there I came to love the country and its people. I met Nelson and we got married in 2020. It was the best decision of my life!
