Searching in All the Wrong Places

You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 16:11

Where can I find the path of life?

In college? Following the counsel of a friend who thinks I would be good at x, y, or z? A test to find my gifting? How about a trip across the world to “find myself”? In striving to make something of my life? NO, He shall show me!!

Where can the fullness of joy be found?

In health, in wealth, in prosperity? In finding and staying in my “happy place”? In “that” relationship, with “that” guy? In marriage? When I finally have a baby of my own? Is that where joy is found? NO, in His presence is not only joy, but the fullness of joy!!

Where can I achieve pleasures forevermore?

In the gratification of long awaited and desired sexual fulfillment? Is it in the success of career or gained position? Or in denying myself nothing that I desire? In doing the job that makes me happy? In living in that place of comfort? Is that where pleasures forevermore reside? NO, at the right hand of our Father are pleasures forevermore!!

More and more I have been learning that true joy is not based on circumstances. Often we fall into the trap of, if only “such and such”, then I would be happy.

The truth is, when you arrive at that place or achieve that thing that you thought was the key to happiness. It doesn’t really fulfill as you thought it would. There is always something else, some other reason why we can’t be happy. The truth is all the good pleasures and gifts of life can only be fully enjoyed from a place of finding your satisfaction in Christ first.

Making the good gifts God has given to us for our pleasure into idols takes all the beauty out of them, because they were never meant to be our life.

When we learn to find JOY in Christ in every circumstance, it is then that all the beauty of the ordinary things can be fully experienced, in their proper place.

Hi! I’m Rachel. Through a series of God orchestrated events I ended up in Haiti, in 2017.  Through years of serving with a ministry there I came to love the country and its people. I met Nelson and we got married in 2020. It was the best decision of my life!
